Matt Gaetz Early Life
On May 7, 1982, Matt Gaetz was born in Hollywood, Florida. Vicky, his mother, has been a pharmacist for over two decades. Both a former politician and a former healthcare executive, Don Gaetz is his father. Jerry Gaetz, a politician from North Dakota, notably passed away after a heart attack while it was being shown live on television at the 1964 Republican National Convention. He was Matt’s paternal grandfather. Don, Matt’s father, unfortunately, witnessed his father’s passing live on television when he was 16 years old.
Don successfully pushed Congress to pass the Hospice Care Reimbursement Act at the beginning of the 1980s. Because of this law, Medicare now covers hospice expenses. Don and a few partners changed what had been a nonprofit hospice care business run by a religious group into a for-profit enterprise called VITAS Healthcare a year after the law was passed.
VITAS was purchased for $400 million by a firm called Chemed in 2004. Today, Chemed’s two main assets, VITAS and Roto-Rooter, help it to earn about $2 billion in sales annually. According to a financial disclosure form submitted when he was a state senator, Don Gaetz’s net worth was $25 million following the sale of VITAS.
After graduating from Florida State University in 2003, Matt Gaetz went to the College of William & Mary to obtain his JD. Matt worked for a law office in Fort Walton Beach after earning his degree from William & Mary.

She has had some experience in politics. She oversaw the internet content for Jeb Bush’s 2016 campaign for president.
Matt Gaetz Career In Politics
Only three years had passed since Gaetz’s law school graduation before he entered politics. Ray Sansom, a Republican state representative, had been charged with corruption at the time. Gaetz joined the running for the position after Sansom was forced to quit in 2010 due to the probe. The district, which included the Florida counties of Okaloosa and Santa Rosa, conducted a special election. Gaetz was one of several applicants vying for Sansom’s position. Famous competitors Jerry Melvin, Bill Garvie, Kabe Woods, and Craig Barker competed against Gaetz. 43 percent of the primary votes went to Gaetz.
After that, a special general election was held to select a replacement for Sansom. Gaetz ran against Jan Fernald, a Democrat. Gaetz won with 66 percent of the vote, defeating Fernald.
Gaetz outraised his Democratic opponent and his Republican primary rivals regarding campaign funding. Gaetz would give his campaign $100,000 of his moneyGaetz would seek the same seat again in 2010. In the election season, he faced no rivals.
Florida redrew its congressional boundaries in 2012, and Gaetz’s district was no more extended home to Santa Rosa County. Gaetz, however, unsuccessfully contested his seat twice again in 2012 and 2014. Gaetz was a well-known conservative even when he was a member of the Florida state legislature. Gaetz and Florida state senator Joe Negron presented legislation that would compel the governor to sign a death warrant for those who had exhausted their appeals, “hurrying up” executions of people on Florida’s death row.
To support legislation that would repeal the federal ethanol requirement, Gaetz collaborated with state senator Greg Evers. In May 2013, then-Gov. Rick Scott would enact this idea into law. Gaetz said in 2013 that he would compete in 2016 for his father Don Gaetz’s State Senate seat representing the 1st district, which was up for election that year due to term limits. Gaetz dropped out of the contest on March 21, 2016, instead of competing for the U.S. House seat representing Florida’s 1st congressional district. The incumbent, Jeff Miller, had declared his intention not to run for reelection 11 days earlier.
Gaetz defeated five other candidates in the Republican primary on August 30, 2016, taking 35.7 percent of the vote to Greg Evers’s 21.5 percent and Cris Dosev’s 20.6 percent. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+22, the 1st is Florida’s and one of the country’s most Republican districts, essentially guaranteeing Gaetz’s victory in the general election.
Gaetz defeated Democratic nominee Steven Specht in the general election of November 8 with 69 percent of the vote. Since 1933, he has been this district’s representative just seven times (the district was numbered the 3rd before 1963).
