Matt Gaetz: Since 2017, Matthew Louis Gaetz II (/etc/ GAYTS; born May 7, 1982) has represented Florida’s first congressional district in the United States Congress. He is a Republican who has been labeled as Donald Trump’s buddy and a supporter of far-right politics.

Gaetz, the son of well-known Florida politician Don Gaetz, was raised in Florida’s Fort Walton Beach. Gaetz and Florida state senator Joe Negron presented legislation that would compel the governor to sign a death warrant for those who had exhausted their appeals, “hurrying up” executions of people on Florida’s death row.

To support legislation that would repeal the federal ethanol requirement, Gaetz collaborated with state senator Greg Evers. In May 2013, then-Gov. Rick Scott would enact this idea into law. Gaetz said in 2013 that he would compete in 2016 for his father Don Gaetz’s State Senate seat representing the 1st district, which was up for election that year due to term limits. Gaetz dropped out of the contest on March 21, 2016, instead of competing for the U.S. House seat representing Florida’s 1st congressional district. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+22, the 1st is Florida’s and one of the country’s most Republican districts, essentially guaranteeing Gaetz’s victory in the general election.

Gaetz defeated Democratic nominee Steven Specht in the general election of November 8 with 69 percent of the vote. Since 1933, he has been this district’s representative just seven times (the district was numbered the 3rd before 1963).
