“I thought she was adorable, hot and all that stuff,” he said in a 2014 interview with HuffPost Live. “But I was very focused–I didn’t really think I had a chance with her, so I wasn’t really focused on that.”

In 1996, the actors from the daytime soap drama tied the knot. “We fell in love long before our characters fell in love…but we were around each other a lot,” Consuelos once told E!. “But our characters fell in love before we did.” On All My Children, Ripa and Consuelos’ characters, Hayley Vaughan and Mateo Santos, eventually got engaged and married. Ripa wore a dress that she had bought at Barney’s warehouse sale for $199 several years before she wore it to their elopement in Las Vegas. As for why they decided to go to Las Vegas, why not? In 1996, Ripa stated in an interview with Soap Opera Digest that “it was really bizarre and very straightforward. Mark just said, ‘Let’s go to Vegas.'”
