Lizzo has continued to generate hits after “Truth Hurts” surged in 2019—two years after it was first released—firmly establishing herself as a bona fide celebrity.
Lizzo, 34, began 2023 by earning her fourth golden gramophone for record of the year for her song “About Damn Time” at the 65th Grammy Awards on February 5. She had a busy year that included playing a 210-year-old flute that initially belonged to President James Madison.
The singer, who has now received 13 nominations for the special award, attended her first ceremony in 2020 and left with her first three victories in the categories of best urban contemporary album, best traditional R&B performance, and best pop solo performance.
Here’s a look back at Lizzo’s experience at the Grammys, from her first trip down the red carpet to her heartfelt homage to Prince and Beyoncé at this year’s broadcast.
Lizzo 2020 Grammy Awards
Lizzo attended the Grammys in 2020 to celebrate being nominated for the first time. She chose a white Versace strapless gown on the red carpet, accessorizing it with a white fur boa and Lorraine Schwartz diamond jewelry.
She won three prizes that evening in addition to opening the event with a performance of “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts,” which included a costume change.
“Tonight is for Kobe,” she said before starting to sing at the performance, which got underway just hours after the awful deaths of Kobe and Gianna Bryant. She debuted on stage in an off-the-shoulder black gown that shimmered in the spotlights before changing into a neon jumpsuit with sequins all over it as she launched into “Truth Hurts.”
That evening, Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith, sang his song “Livin’ on the Edge” live in front of an audience that included Lizzo. Later, she ditched her stage outfit in favor of a sheer Versace gown draped in cascading silver threads and glittering with crystals.

Lizzo 2021 Grammy Awards
Despite not being nominated for an award in 2021, Lizzo made sure to join in on the festivities and attend the 63rd ceremony. For the big night in music, she wore not one but two Balmain looks. She was seen arriving at the awards ceremony wearing a strapless dress in iridescent green, along with matching heels and sparkly jewelry.
She wore a different iridescent outfit, this time in a light pink color and accessorized with enormous pink hair clips, to present Megan Thee Stallion with the prize for a best new artist.
She flaunted the pink ensemble in two backstage images she posted to Instagram with Harry Styles, who won his first Grammy in 2021. The singer did not attend the shortened Grammy Awards in Las Vegas in 2022.

Lizzo 2023 Grammy Awards
Lizzo was nominated for five categories at the 2023 ceremony, including a record of the year, which she won for the song “About Damn Time,” album of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, best pop vocal album, and record of the year.
She wore a voluminous Dolce & Gabbana outfit when she and her boyfriend, Myke Wright, arrived on the red carpet. The costume was finished with a blazing orange gown and cape with matching floral decorations. Lizzo performed a medley of her songs “Special” and the award-winning “About Damn Time” early on in the ceremony’s schedule.
Later that night, Lizzo took the stage to claim her prize. She started by saying, “Let me share a fact with you. Adele and I are having fun together, simply being silly and supporting our pals. This night is fantastic and so unanticipated.”
Then she continued by paying tribute to the late Prince with her prize. “I decided to devote my life to creating uplifting music after Prince passed away. What’s wrong with you? I responded, “I don’t care if my optimism bothers you.” “She laughed as she said.
She continued, “Positive and feel-good music wasn’t popular then, and I felt misunderstood. “Even though I felt like I was on the outside looking in, I stayed true to who I was because I wanted to improve the world.
For the world to improve, I had to be that change. I’m pleased to be a part of all these songs about enjoying our bodies, feeling good in our flesh, and feeling f—-ing fantastic right now as I look around.”
After praising her family and urging her audience and admirers to “remain true to themselves,” she mentioned Beyoncé, who had just earlier become the most successful artist in Grammy history.
She responded, “I skipped school in the fifth grade to see you perform,” Beyonce glanced back at her, looking moved. I was excused from school by my sister. I’m fine. It was literature!
She added, “You altered my life. You sang that gospel medley, and I was moved by how it made me feel. I said, “Thank you so much; this is how I want my music to make people feel.” Lizzo posted about the significance of receiving her award on Instagram the morning following the gala.
“Whitney Houston, who won Record of the Year in 1994 with “I Will Always Love You,” was the only black woman to do so… I don’t take this lightly,” she added, posting three images from the evening she spent with the monument. “I’m grateful,”
