American physician-scientist and immunologist Anthony Stephen Fauci, OMRI, is the president’s chief medical advisor and the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Fauci has worked for the NIH as a doctor for almost fifty years, during which time he has advised every president of the United States since Ronald Reagan on matters of public health. Since 1984, he has served as the NIAID’s director, during which time he has made significant contributions to the study of HIV/AIDS and other immunodeficiency illnesses. When looking at all scientific papers published between 1983 and 2002, Fauci was consistently one of the most mentioned scientists in the world. Working on the PEPFAR AIDS relief program earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former President George W. Bush in 2008.
