Jaouad posted a photo of Batiste clutching his five Grammy awards with the message, “Couldn’t be prouder of this deeply humble, brilliant, good man ♥️ “ in April 2022 to celebrate Batiste’s historic win.

On Nov. 17, 2022, Jaouad celebrated her husband again by sharing a sweet photo of the two smiling and embracing during his birthday. “We fêted my beloved on his 36th last Saturday with dear friends and a cauldron of red beans and an impromptu jam that went into the wee hours,” the author wrote in the caption. “But really, after what we’ve been through in the last year, he deserves a whole birthday month.”

Suleika Jaouad has been Jon’s longtime girlfriend, and he just revealed on CBS Sunday Morning that the two got married. “We got married the day before I was admitted to the hospital to undergo my bone marrow transplant,” Suleika said. Suleika, a journalist herself, claimed that she and Jon had been engaged for a long time. “We have known that we wanted to get married, I think, from the first week we started dating,” she explained. “That’s when Jon first brought up the topic of marriage to me. So, we’ve had eight years. This is not, you know, a hasty decision!”

The couple used bread ties instead of traditional wedding bands because their wedding was speedy. It appears that the wedding served as a declaration of their future compatibility for both of them.

“Yes. It’s an act of defiance,” Jon declared. “The darkness will try to overtake you, but just turn on the light. Focus on the light. Hold onto the light.”

Jon had been planning to propose for some time when she was diagnosed. “He said to me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis,” Suleika explained. “It’s taken me a year to design your ring. So, just know this timing has nothing to do with it. But what I do want you to know is that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes it all the clearer to me that I want to commit to this and for us to be together.'”

When Did Jon Batiste And Suleika Jaouad First Meet?

At band camp, which Jaouad referred to in an Instagram post from 2020 as “the most awkward place on earth,” the two first connected when she was 13 and he was 14.  The two got back together when Batiste paid her a visit to the hospital as she underwent leukaemia treatment.

“To my surprise, he showed up with his entire band,” she wrote in a piece for her column. “Every inch of the 25-room floor was filled with music. Timidly at first, and then with jubilation, patients, nurses and other hospital workers began to dance and clap. The oncology ward was breathing a sigh of relief, its inhabitants rejoicing in a temporary timeout, losing themselves to the beauty and healing power of the music. I was beaming beneath my face mask. The saints had marched in. And they played that song, too.”
