What Is The Plot of Waterboy?
Robert “Bobby” Boucher Jr., 31, is the University of Louisiana football team’s water boy and is a socially awkward stutterer with some mental disabilities. He believes his father, Robert Sr., died of thirst in the Sahara while serving in the Peace Corps back in the 1960s and resides with his protective and deeply devout mother, Helen.
Red Beaulieu, the Cougars head coach, fires Bobby for being “disruptive” during his 18 years of employment as the players taunt him frequently. As the team’s water boy, Bobby approaches Coach Klein of the South-Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs.
Due to budget shortages, the Mud Dogs have lost 40 straight games, their cheerleaders are alcoholics, and the players must share equipment. Klein exhorts Bobby to defend himself when the new squad makes fun of him.
In remembrance of the harassment he has endured over the years, Bobby tackles the team’s quarterback and knocks him out. Klein meets with Helen and attempts to convince her to let Bobby play on the squad after noticing his potential, but she refuses, claiming it would be too risky.
Bobby is eager to go to college, so Klein persuades him to play. The Mud Dogs go on a winning streak as Bobby becomes a feared linebacker. Vicki Vallencourt, his convicted childhood love interest, can also rekindle their relationship because of Bobby’s newfound celebrity and self-assurance. Bobby is forbidden from meeting Helen because, in Helen’s words, she “is the devil.”
Due to its success, the squad is invited to play the Cougars and Coach Beaulieu in the yearly Bourbon Bowl on New Year’s Day. Beaulieu and his gang break into the Mud Dogs’ pep rally to disclose that Bobby was homeschooled and that the high school he attended was a fraud, disqualifying him from playing football and enrolling in college. The squad and supporters turn on Bobby because they think he is a liar and cheater.
