Siamak Namazi: Jailed Iranian American Siamak Namazi Starts Hunger Strike!

Siamak Namazi: A prisoner from the United States who is Iranian has gone on a seven-day hunger strike and asked US President Joe Biden to send him back. Siamak Namazi requested in a letter to Biden on Monday, the seventh anniversary of the exchange of five US citizens for Iranian detainees that was timed to coincide with the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal. Namazi was detained in October 2015 on suspicion of attempting to topple the government, which Namazi vigorously disputes.

His father, Baquer, who visited Iran in 2016 out of worry for his imprisoned son, had previously been incarcerated on suspicion of espionage; he was freed two years later but was not allowed to travel. He was eventually granted permission to leave Iran for medical care in October.

Namazi wrote to Biden stating that he would be on a hunger strike for seven days and requesting that he consider the suffering of American people held in Iran for one minute each day for the following week. They include 67-year-old environmentalist and dual British national Morad Tahbaz and 58-year-old businessman Emad Shargi.

In the open letter published by Namazi’s attorney, Jared Genser stated, “the US Government promised my family that I would be safely home within weeks when the Obama Administration unconscionably left me in danger and freed the other American nationals Iran kept hostage on January 16, 2016.”

The spokeswoman stated, “We are working relentlessly to bring him home, along with all US nationals who are unlawfully incarcerated in Iran. It is unacceptable that Iran is holding American citizens against their will to gain political sway.

The Iranian government typically rejects claims of dual nationality, and on Saturday, it announced the death of Alireza Akbari, a British national accused of spying for his adopted nation. The country’s leadership charged former Iranian deputy defense minister Akbari with taking part in the murder of a nuclear scientist.
