This week, Sam Smith reportedly attacked with vile taunts while strolling through a Brooklyn park. The British pop star is texting on their phone in a video trending on Twitter when a woman begins hurling terrible homophobic and transphobic epithets at the performer.
Smith, a nonbinary person who uses the pronouns they/them, then continues to walk, appearing unperturbed by the attack, as at least one other person joins in the chorus of hatred.
“You belong in hell! Sam Smith belongs in hell! You demonic, twisted, sick bastard,” one woman is heard saying. “Leave the kids alone, you sick f–! Sam Smith is a pedophile!” the woman adds.” You sick motherf—Sam Smith! You’re evil!”
One man can also be heard calling Smith a “groomer” near the end of the 30-second video, which was released on Twitter late on Wednesday. This slur is frequently employed by members of the far-right to support the erroneous claim that LGBTQ individuals wish to “recruit” young people.
The British singer-collaboration songwriter’s with German-born pop diva Kim Petras “Unholy” earned them their fifth Grammy Award earlier this month. Shortly after receiving the prize for best pop duet performance, Smith and Petras gave a show-stopping version of their international hit.

The club-ready song “Unholy about adultery, vice, and a “dirty, nasty lad,” debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. charts in late September before topping charts everywhere else.
Smith performed at the Grammys while decked up in red latex and a top hat with devil horns, and transgender performer Petras sang and danced within a cage manned by three she-devils. Conservative viewers denounced the performance as “evil,” “satanic,” “degenerate trash,” and an instance of the “normalization of satan in pop music” right away.
At least 18 complaints were also lodged with the Federal Communications Commission in response to the “vile, horrible, and downright terrible performance,” According to TMZ.
