American basketball player Robert Covington is presently a member of the Houston Rockets. He was raised in the Chicago suburbs after being born on December 14, 1990, in Bellwood, Illinois, west of Chicago.
Before deciding to play professionally, Covington played four years of collegiate basketball at Tennessee State. Covington was initially signed as an undrafted free agency by the Houston Rockets, but he had to establish himself in the G League before being given a chance in the NBA. Covington missed time due to injuries in both the 2015–16 and 2016–17 campaigns, but when fit, he contributed as a dependable outside shooter and capable defender.
Covington appeared to secure his future in Philadelphia by signing a four-year, $62 million agreement with the 76ers in November 2017. This occurred as the 76ers began to show improvement. After averaging 12.6 points per game and being nominated to the All-Defensive First Team, he had one of his best seasons.
But in November 2018, he was part of a deal that sent Jimmy Butler to the 76ers and sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before suffering a knee injury and missing 22 games with the Timberwolves, Covington averaged 14.5 points and 2.3 steals per game. Covington underwent season-ending knee surgery as a result of an injury setback. Covington joined the Timberwolves at the start of the 2019–20 campaign and contributed consistently. He was acquired by the Houston Rockets in a four-team trade in February 2020.
