In his illustrious career, Jay Leno has served as the face of comedy twice. It is a joke; he just made it because he has a “fresh new face.” The 72-year-old comedian opened up — and laughed — about the third-degree burns he had while working on a vintage car after gasoline sprayed over his hands and face due to a fuel leak, causing an explosion.
Leno spent ten days in the hospital at a burn unit, but despite the seriousness of the circumstance, the comic didn’t want to stop his jokes. Standing ovations were followed by Leno briefly outlining what had occurred before delivering the one-liners.
“This is a brand new face,” he said. “I was working on a car, and I got a face full of gasoline, and it caught fire. I had been eating a Flaming Hot Dorito when I bit into it. It set my face on fire.”
“You’d think there’d be a zipper here or something, but no,” said Leno, pointing to his face. “Only for the second time in my career am I the new face of comedy. I got it once in the ’80s, and now I get it again. This is a brand new ear.”
Although Leno now makes jokes about it, there was a moment when it appeared that Leno would have a difficult time making a full recovery. Leno suffered “severe injuries” but is currently “doing quite well,” according to Dr. Peter Grossman, the prominent burn center’s director and a well-known expert in the comprehensive treatment of burn injuries.
“He has an assertive attitude. He is a person of incredible strength, “Grossman divulged. “He is someone who genuinely wants to go on, to try to find a way to get past this period in his life and to return to what he usually enjoys doing, which is to be out there and perform and be with the people.
I believe he will get there eventually, but I reminded him to take a back seat and look after Jay.” The comedian started 2023 with a terrifying motorcycle collision as if the burns on his face and hands weren’t enough for him to deal with by the end of 2022.
“I got knocked off my motorcycle,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “So I’ve got a broken collarbone. I’ve got two broken ribs. I’ve got two cracked kneecaps.” The former Tonight Show host explained to the publication that on January 17, while testing a 1940 Indian motorcycle, he smelled gas seeping.
“So I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot but with no flag hanging from it,” he recalled. “So, I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clotheslined me and knocked me off the bike.”
