Kyrsten Lea Sinema has been the senior United States Senator for Arizona since January 2019. She was a social worker and attorney in the past. She spent three terms as a state representative for Arizona’s 15th legislative district from 2005 to 2011, and from 2011 to 2012, she served one term as a state senator for Arizona’s 15th legislative district.

The senior United States senator from Arizona, Kyrsten Lea Sinema, is an American politician and former social worker. She has held this position since 2019. Sinema, a former Democratic Party member, left the party in December 2022 but continues to caucus there.
She served three terms as the 15th legislative district’s state representative from 2005 to 2011, one term as the district’s state senator from 2011 to 2012, and three terms as the 9th congressional district’s representative from 2013 to 2019.
Sinema got her start in politics with the Arizona Green Party and became well-known for her progressive activism, standing out for issues like LGBT rights and opposing the war on terror. In 2004, she switched from the Green Party to the Arizona Democratic Party, and in 2012, she won a position in the House of Representatives.
She joined the Blue Dog Coalition, the New Democrat Coalition, and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus after winning the election, accumulating one of the most conservative voting records in the Democratic caucus.
In the 2018 Senate race to replace Jeff Flake, who is stepping down, Sinema defeated Republican candidate Martha McSally. She was elected to the Senate in 2018 and the House of Representatives in 2012, respectively, making her the second openly LGBT woman (after Tammy Baldwin). She is the first openly atheist member of Congress and the first woman to be elected to the Senate from Arizona.

In an interview with Elle magazine, Sinema acknowledged that she has “always been out” to her friends and family. She did, however, come out as bisexual for the first time in 2005 in response to a Republican colleague’s reportedly homophobic speech.
Sinema said to her colleague that we’re just folks like everyone else who want and deserve respect. When reporters questioned Sinema about her statement afterward, she responded, “Duh, I’m bisexual.”
