The New England Patriots defeated the New York Jets 25-6 in a game that was never really in doubt for the 2021 season.
Mac Jones, the Patriots’ rookie quarterback, was effective once more, completing 73 per cent of his passes for 186 yards while intercepting his counterpart Zach Wilson four times. A 152-yard rushing attack by Jacksonville on 31 carries wasn’t enough to make it all rainbows and daisies for the Patriots.
Trent Brown’s absence from the New England offensive line has been a major setback for the Patriots. In the end, a win is a win in the NFL, and the Patriots will gleefully return to Foxborough with a 1-1 record and prepare for the New Orleans Saints.
J.J. Taylor and Yodny Cajuste return to the field this week after being sidelined for the first game of the season. In the absence of rookie Rhamondre Stevenson, Taylor will take his position. In addition to Trent Brown and Kyle Van Noy, who both missed numerous practices last week, there are now two more inactive.
Denzel Mims, the Jets’ former second-round choice at wide receiver, is not expected to play this week.
The New England Patriots had the opportunity to choose the coin toss at the start of the game, but they chose the wrong one. Despite Matthew Slater’s best efforts, he opted for tails. The Jets decided to wait until the second half to make a decision. The ball will go to New England first.
First Quarter
In the first kickoff of the game, Matt Ammendola found the back of the end zone and put the Patriots and Mac Jones on their 25-yard line. Kendrick Bourne mishandled the ball on the second play from scrimmage, but the action was halted due to the team’s inability to move ahead.
A third-and-goal conversion and a roughing the passer penalty gave New England a first-and-goal at the Jets 36-yard line. New England was forced to punt after a blown draw play and a sack of Jones pushed them out of field goal range.
J.C. Jackson intercepted Zach Wilson’s first pass attempt of the game, giving New England the ball back at the Jet’s 35-yard line.
The Patriot’s offense stalled after gaining a first down on the ground. An Isaiah Wynn penalty put them up for a third-and-long situation, which they couldn’t convert since none of Jones’ efforts gained more than six yards. They had to settle with a Nick Folk field goal of 46 yards.
This time around, Jake Bailey’s kickoff went out of bounds, giving New York the ball at their own 20. On their first play, the Jets gained 13 yards and entered Patriots territory. Adrian Phillips intercepted Wilson’s second throw attempt on the following play.

On the first play of the game, James White ran a running back screen for 28 yards, putting New England in Jets territory. After another first down, the Patriots threw a throwing play to White, who passed back to Jones, who found Jonnu Smith for 19-yards and a first down.
After a 37-yard kick return by former Patriot Braxton Berrios, the Jets were able to get the ball rolling on their next drive. The clock ran out in the first quarter after a pair of runs.
Second Quarter
First-and-goal on third-and-one gave New York a 1-0 lead in the second quarter. Two plays later, Wilson found a wide-open Elijah Moore for a gain of 27 yards on his first pass.

After a New England kickoff was returned to their own 25, Yasir Durant was beaten off the line twice in three plays for two sacks. After a three-and-out by New England, the Patriots punt to Berrios, whose return puts the ball at the New York 49-yard line for the visiting Giants.
On their opening play of the series, the New York Jets scored a 17-yard first down to take a 1-0 lead over the New England Patriots. J.C. Jackson picked Wilson off for the second time in a row as the two teams went back to the ground.
Jakobi Meyers caught a 24-yard pass from Jones and the Patriots offense in the first play of the next series. They punted from their 39-yard line because they couldn’t add much more.
The New York Jets kicked off their next game at their 20-yard line. On the opening play, they were penalized for holding and faced a 1st-and-18 from within the 10-yard line. After that, Wilson found himself in a similar circumstance where he was close to being intercepted once more. The Jets were able to punt because Ja’Whaun Bentley tipped the ball away from Jalen Mills.
With 2:09 left in the game, the New England Patriots began their next drive from their 31-yard line, this time with Justin Herron at right tackle. The two-minute practice was a fantastic opportunity to witness Mac Jones in action.
With 0:33 left in the half, Jones found Hunter Henry, Nelson Agholor, and James White for first downs to move New England inside the Jet 30-yard line.
On third down, Jones was penalized for intentional grounding, which resulted in a field goal attempt. He subsequently completed two short throws. In doing so, he tied the Patriots’ record of 31 consecutive made field goals with Folk’s heroics from 49 yards out. The New York Jets took a knee to run out the clock and bring the game to halftime. Third Quarter
The Jets took over possession of the football on their 22-yard line to begin the second half. In place of J.C. Jackson, Joejuan Williams started in the secondary for the New England Patriots. Wilson threw another interception during a sequence in which both teams were penalised. Devin McCourty fumbled the ball this time around.

Upon receiving the ball at their 10-yard line due to a penalty for a block below the waist, the Jets began their subsequent drive at that location. On a 3rd-and-8, Wilson got a first down with his legs to give the Giants some breathing room.
J.C. Jackson was penalised for a defensive pass interference call, which set up the Jets at the New England 31-yard line, and they continued to move the ball well on the ground.
Wilson was sacked on third down by the Patriots’ defence, forcing a 53-yard field goal attempt by Matt Ammendola. His miss means the Patriot’s offense will begin from their 38-yard line, and they’ll have to make a field goal.

Fourth Quarter
In the first quarter, both teams were penalised, but the Jets were forced to punt when Jonathan Jones intercepted a fourth-and-two pass on 4th-and-2.
With the ball at their 47-yard line, the Patriots took over. Braxton Berrios hauled in a fair catch at the Jets’ 17-yard line after Jake Bailey booted the ball to him. The Patriots appeared eager to drag out as much time as possible.
Third-and-10 from their own 17 was Wilson’s opportunity to get the ball to Berrios, who caught it and ran it in for a gain of 27. The Jets continued to move the ball effectively on the ground and gained 35 more yards to enter the end zone.

The Patriots offence did little after a short Devin McCourty kick return, gaining only one yard on three plays before punting it back to the Jets. An incredible touchdown from Jake Bailey brought the Jets down to the Jets’ 20-yard line.
After a pair of incomplete passes to Joejuan Williams, the Jets were forced to play with a feeling of urgency and turned the ball over on downs. At the Jets’ 25-yard line, the Patriots took over and kept the ball on the ground to end the game. They were forced to try a field goal after accumulating just 12-yards on six carries. New York had no choice but to use the air to try and win the game. Despite Wilson’s 35-yard completion on 4th-and-15, a pair of sacks by Josh Uche effectively ended the game for the Patriots.
