Nebraska Gov Pillen Appoints Pete Ricketts To Senate Seat!

Nebraska Gov: Thursday, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced that he would appoint former Gov. Pete Ricketts to fill the Senate seat that Republican Ben Sasse gave up when he quit.

Ricketts, a Republican who just finished his second term as governor, will stay in office until a special election in 2024. The seat will be up for election again in Nebraska in 2026 for a full six-year term.

Pillen and Ricketts spoke at a news conference at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. Pillen called Ricketts’s choice “very, very clear.” Sasse officially quit his job on Sunday. He will start his new job as president of the University of Florida next month.

Ricketts backed Pillen in the Republican primary for governor last year. This helped Pillen rise to the top of a crowded GOP field. Last week, Pillen started his new job. He said Ricketts was “in it for the long haul” to keep the seat.

“I don’t believe in placeholders. I think every day is important,” Pillen said, adding that his office talked to nine possible candidates to replace Sasse before deciding on Ricketts. Ricketts said, “I’m going to run in both 2024 and 2026.”

In 2014 and 2018, he ran for governor and won 18 points. Pillen said that Ricketts’ ability to win elections was a big reason why he should be chosen for an office he’d have to run for twice in a row.

Nebraska is mainly made up of Republicans. In 2020, it was won by 19 points by the former president, Donald Trump. Since 2012, when Sen. Ben Nelson decided not to run again, the state hasn’t had a Democratic senator.

Ricketts ran for the Senate once before, in 2006. He lost to Nelson, who had been governor before and was very popular. Nebraska’s senior senator, Republican Deb Fischer, said Thursday at the state Capitol that Ricketts will be able to learn quickly as he moves from dealing with state issues to dealing with national problems.

Ricketts said he thinks he will have “a lot in common” with Sasse’s conservative views on judicial nominations, national defense, and how the US should deal with China.

Ricketts said, “I do think it’s important that the same conservative values and ideas come to DC.” He said that Matt Miltenberger, his chief of staff when he was governor, would help him find people to work for him in Washington.
