5 Louisiana Officers: The fatal 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene resulted in five Louisiana law enforcement officers being charged with state crimes on Thursday, including negligent homicide and malfeasance.
These charges are the first to surface from a death that authorities initially attributed to a car accident before long-suppressed body-camera video revealed white officers are beating, stunning, and dragging the Black motorist as he screamed, “I’m scared!”
The 11-member grand jury took an hour to deliberate before indicting former Louisiana State Troopers Kory York, Christopher Harpin, John Clary, Dakota Demoss, and former Troop F commander John Peters, as well as former Union Parish sheriff deputy Christopher Harpin, for their roles in Greene’s arrest, which ultimately resulted in his death, and the cover-up of his death. The men were charged with the following:
- Kory York − One count of negligent homicide and 10 counts of misconduct in office.
- Christopher Harpin − Six counts of misconduct in office.
- John Clary − One count of misconduct in office and one count of obstruction of justice.
- Dakota Demoss − One count of obstruction of justice.
- John Peters − One count of obstruction of justice.
The State Police arrested Greene on May 10, 2019, soon after midnight, after a two-parish, high-speed chase that resulted in a collision. Greene was severely assaulted and later died during the arrest. Initially, Greene did not stop for a vague traffic infraction 30 miles south of the Arkansas state line.
Demoss, York, and Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth are shown on body camera film stun-dancing, beating, and dragging Greene just before he is killed. Louisiana State Troopers disciplined the three officers after the film was made public; Hollingsworth passed away in a single-passenger automobile accident in September 2021.
In October, Third Judicial District Attorney John Belton declared that Demoss and York, who he believes committed crimes in Greene’s bloody, tragic arrest, should be indicted.
Belton stated, “The folks of Union Parish spoke tonight, and I’ve always indicated that I would take all legal facts to a grand jury and leave the grand jury to make the decision.
