Season three of You premiered on Netflix in October 2021, but the streaming service had already renewed the stalker series for season four before the third season ever aired. So get ready for Joe Goldberg to get much more in trouble. What’s the best part? This time, he’s going global. “When [showrunner] Greg [Berlanti] and I read Caroline Kepnes’ novel, we were instantly intrigued with Joe Goldberg and his weird worldview,” executive producer Sera Gamble said of the show’s renewal.
“And it’s been exciting to see Penn [Badgley] bring Joe to life in a frightening but captivating way. We’re grateful that Netflix has shown You such incredible support, and that people all over the world have enjoyed seeing Joe get everything completely wrong over the past three seasons. In season four, the entire You team is excited to explore new, dark dimensions of love.” So, what is next for our serial-killer bookkeeper? Everything you need to know is right here.
You season 4 potential release date on Netflix: When will it air?
Season four filming officially began on March 22, 2022, in London, and they had just finished filming the first four episodes as of June. The Netflix team revealed a set clapperboard with the date written on it. Naturally, the board was splattered with blood… after all, this is Joe we’re talking about. This information was obtained via Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in a different format, or more information, on their website.
We also know they could well be filming in Paris, seeing as that was where we last saw him at the end of season three. Tradition dictates that the upcoming chapter will arrive at the end of 2022. We’ll keep you updated either way!
If you’re jonesing for some Badgley in the meantime you can catch him on his podcast Podcrushed. Together with hosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, he peels back the painful layers of adolescence in an attempt to explore the heartbreak, anxiety, and self-discovery of those precious teenage years. “It’s not that it’s cathartic,” Badgley explained during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“It’s more like all four of us who created the show, we have, there are three hosts and then we have our producer-engineer [David Ansari], who’s married to one of our hosts, the four of us are fascinated with how painful that time is. “But also why and what are the conditions you could create that would make that less painful and more powerful ’cause at that age you’re really thinking about the world for the first time.”
You season 4 cast: Who will be in it?
Penn Badgely will naturally be back as our twisted leading man, Joe Goldberg… or whatever name he’s going by these days. During the course of season three, Joe rebranded himself into the ultimate stay-at-home dad with his devoted chef wife, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti)… until his obsessive and killer instincts took over again.
Seeing as she was burned alive inside their suburban home at the end of season three, something tells us we won’t be seeing Victoria back in the cast… But then again, the ghosts of Joe’s girlfriend’s past do come back to haunt him from time to time, if only in his head.

Badgley highlighted why he thinks it was the proper option to end that section of the story: “They’ve had their arc. We’d been to a lot of places, witnessed a lot of highs and lows, and it seemed like, ‘OK, if this is going to happen, it’s time.’
“It signals a significant end to the chapters we’ve known of Joe.” I believe there must be some pretty substantial, fundamental alterations in how Joe’s entire equipment will continue to function. Because we’ve witnessed him go through so much. In terms of the show’s tone, there may be a pre-Love and post-Love, because I’m not sure how much can be repeated.”
Tati Gabrielle may be back as Marienne – the next central “you” in Joe’s world. After falling for him while working at the library together, she fled to Paris. And he’s gone to get her and her daughter back. Even though his death was blasted all over the news. We don’t see this ending well. Badgley highlighted why he thinks it was the proper option to end that section of the story: “They’ve had their arc. We’d been to a lot of places, witnessed a lot of highs and lows, and it seemed like, ‘OK, if this is going to happen, it’s time.’
Season four will also see the arrival of Euphoria’s Lukas Gage. On February 17, Netflix confirmed that his character will become a series regular (and a constant thorn in Joe’s side) as his new foe. So he’d better keep an eye on his back. According to Deadline, Gage will play businessman Adam, “an ex-pat American, the youngest son of a wealthy East Coast mogul.” But Adam is on a losing run when it comes to living up to the expectations of his prosperous family.
“Adam brings a whole suitcase full of emotional baggage to the show.” The seemingly carefree partygoer is a gambler with a dark secret that he keeps hidden by self-medicating. His eagerness to prove himself has led him to take large risks, and trusting him may prove to be a costly error for his friends and girlfriend.”

Gage announced his new position in a series of Instagram stories, saying he was “very pleased about this.” But good luck making it through the season, dear friend. Anyone who gets on Joe’s nerves usually doesn’t remain around for long. Let’s hope The White Lotus star survives the season unhurt. Season four will also see the addition of Ghosts’ Charlotte Ritchie, who will play Kate, a frigid art gallery director who is wary of Joe from the moment she meets him.
In terms of the rest of the cast, we can get flashbacks of young Joe, his birth mother, and the woman who befriended him while he was in care but expect a totally new cast of unavoidably annoying individuals. On our program, one of the questions we often ask is, ‘What pool of entitled douchebags do we want to throw Joe into next?’ And if you leave the confines of the United States, there are many untapped pools all over the world “Gamble stated (via TV Line).
You season 4 plot: What’s going to happen?
As previously stated, Joe is now in Paris after murdering Love, who, to be fair, attempted to slice his throat first. But, once again, he managed to wiggle his way out of the situation and liberate himself from the bonds of matrimony. The only drawback was handing over his son Henry to their neighbour Dante and his husband, even though he knew it was ultimately in Henry’s best interests. (We can’t say he’s incorrect.)
Sera Gamble discussed how Joe’s abandonment of Henry could affect the upcoming season. “You can’t pretend something so significant about a character didn’t happen,” she told E! News. It will, I believe, shape him from now on. And even his precise plan for when and if he would return for his son is something we will… come together and discuss for hours and hours and hours between snacks.”
Meanwhile, he has traveled to Paris in search of Marienne and given his proclivity for stalking, Joe is likely to discover her. But he’s meant to be dead after being slaughtered by Love and baked into a pie, which should make for an interesting talk when the two finally meet, especially since Love disclosed some unsettling home truths about Joe to Marianne.

In an interview with TV Line, Badgley remarked, “I suppose if Joe finds [her], he’ll live happily ever after and have beautiful babies.” “He’ll learn French, become a writer, spend a lot of time along the Seine, and send his children to school in Sweden.” “No, I believe Joe will stay the same. Someone as severely unwell, troubled, traumatized, and violent faces a significant challenge if they are to heal and change. I’m not sure it’s conceivable for someone so far gone.”
Another murder is probably certainly in the works (as is the nature of the show), especially if the most recent set photos (released in June) are to be trusted. The photos show Badgley’s Joe on the beach, tossing trash bags into a river or sea. ‘Trash collection’ takes on a whole new meaning.
When asked about the direction of Season 4, Badgley stated: “The tone remains consistent, but there is a change in format. We’re trying something new. It’s almost as though we’re switching genres. And I believe it works.” Shooting across the pond seemed to have had an impact. When discussing how the set will be relocated from Paris to London, Badgley said, “It’s cheaper.” He added on his character development: “The problem is within him, not outside of him, thus he is attempting to change. He is constantly trying, failing, and trying again.”

Poor serial killer, he can’t seem to get a break. We should note that there is no official indication of whether we will see Gabrielle’s character again in the future. Maybe, just maybe, she’s gotten away from him for good. Gabrielle told The Wrap about how she believes this will all play out if Marienne does return: “I don’t think Marianne would go back [to Joe], not even close. However, I believe she would grant him a conversation.
“For one thing, her heart was once again manipulated. And I think she needs a freakin’ talk, she needs to hear it from his mouth, for her own recovery… I believe it will provide her comfort… And I truly want Marienne to enjoy exposing Joe. That’s what I’m looking for. Yes, I do require that.” History strongly suggests that she will die, but may the tables be turned in season four, with Joe’s luck finally running out?
“The most essential thing about that last scene [in season two, when Joe is spying on his neighbor Natalie (RIP) through the breach in the fence] is that it confirms Joe is still Joe in a way that’s not going to be good for Joe,” Gamble told The Hollywood Reporter. “That he hasn’t realized he can’t just keep hunting for the next person to pin his hopes and ambitions to.
“Things aren’t going to go well for Joe.” Things haven’t gone very smoothly in the run-up to Season 4.
“I feel like season three is a season of massive loss and sadness for him,” Gamble added (via Collider). “And we leave him having lost or felt like he had to let go of everything he cared about really. “So the story from here is about how he gets any of that back or finds something else, because if the Joe you met in the first scene of the pilot, where the bell rings in the book shop and the girl in the jeans walks in if he had one hole in his heart he wanted to fill, now he had like 17. “So we’ve been with him longer, so we’re more familiar with his baggage, right? So I believe there is a lot to be discovered there.”
After faking his death, avoiding those he leaves behind will be more vital than ever if he doesn’t want to risk being discovered. Throughout the seasons, we’ve seen Joe offer mercy (or simply leave a few folks alone). From Ellie Alves (Jenna Ortega) to Love’s mother, Dottie Quinn (Saffron Burrows), to Theo and Matthew Engler, there’s something for everyone (Dylan Arnold and Scott Speedman respectively).
None of these performers have confirmed whether or not they will appear in Season 4, but their existence in Joe’s head, even if only in the background, puts both him and them in danger. “We addressed her in the season because we wanted to make it apparent that, yeah, she’s still out there and she does essentially represent a type of threat to Joe, because she totally has his number in terms of who and what he is and what he has done,” Gamble stated to E! News.
So maybe season four will focus on his history catching up with him? It’s also critical for Gamble to keep things interesting, which includes Joe’s various love relationships.
“We don’t want to feel like we’re repeating ourselves,” she explained. “And so, every character who enters Joe’s group goes through a really rigorous process of simply trying to really speak about who would be very different, and what haven’t we explored that we can.”

Whatever happens in season four, you can expect the same distinct tone that we’ve grown to love and fear. “I was relieved when the first season of the program aired, and that we had achieved the tone of the show where people recognized how sarcastic and subversive we were about subjects I thought were really serious.
“So what I hope is that people not only appreciate it and say, ‘That was f**king nuts,’ but also have a talk about some of the dark stuff within of us that we want to criticize and say, ‘It’s not inside of us,’ but it’s in all of us…
“People are not without flaws. We’re not even nice to ourselves. Most of us don’t kill anyone, but I’m not sure. Is it truly Pollyanna to say that I wish people are gentler to themselves about the ugly things in their heads? Because they’re watching it and thinking to themselves, ‘Well, I’m kind of charmed by his awful thoughts.'”
Collider published Badgley’s opinions on Season 4: “I believe it is more about Joe’s relationship with himself. Because this isn’t a show about a murderer, but rather about… I believe it is exaggerating the mistakes we make in relationships for the purpose of a good story. For example, we really need to lay down our swords and cease being competitive in relationships, but that is extremely difficult to do.”
Netflix hasn’t said whether season four will be the show’s final season, but if it does mean the end of Joe, we may also predict the end of You.
Kepnes is now working on her fourth novel in the series, which is still nameless. It’s unknown how they’ll compare because the TV show has already diverged from the source material in several ways.
When asked what readers should expect from her future novel, Kepnes told THR: “He’s [Joe] going to a new place, and he’s going to get to experience a dream that he didn’t allow himself to have.”
You season 4 trailer: When can I watch it?
Expect no fresh footage for quite some time, folks. Keep an eye on this space for updates. With filming presently underway in Europe, you can probably expect something by the autumn. Would we deceive You…?
