Although the precise cause of Bonnar’s passing is still unknown, “presumed heart complications” were mentioned in the UFC announcement. UFC President Dana White referred to Stephan Bonnar as “one of the most important fighters to ever compete in the Octagon” in a statement announcing Bonnar’s passing.
“He will never be forgotten because of his fight with Forrest Griffin, which forever changed the sport. Fans adored him, could relate to him, and he always gave his all for them. He will be missed.”

Bonnar and Griffin were inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in July 2013 for their fight. The two would face off in the octagon one-year after their pivotal bout, with Bonnar again losing a decision.

Bonnar was open about the damage caused by his career in MMA, saying his decision to hang up his gloves was influenced by the discovery of an enlarged cavum septi transparent, which has been linked to the potential future diagnosis of CTE. After suffering a severe back injury that left him hospitalized, he told MMA Fighting he was done with professional competition.
