Rep Katie Porter: On Tuesday, Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) declared her intention to run for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) seat in the 2024 election. Porter has previously stated that she was thinking about running for the Senate seat in deep-blue California, which is expected to be vacant. Feinstein has not officially declared her retirement, although it is widely believed that she will do so shortly.
Porter made it clear on Tuesday that she is unwilling to wait for 89-year-old Feinstein to decide formally. Porter declared, “it’s time for fresh leadership in the U.S. Senate” in a video announcing her candidacy.
Porter declared, “California needs a warrior in Washington.” “For that reason, I’m declaring my bid for the US Senate in 2024.” Porter recently completed a difficult reelection battle in which she narrowly defeated Republican Scott Baugh by more than three percentage points.
She is known for being a successful fundraiser as well. Her campaign had more than $25 million in cash as of late November, having raised that amount during her 2022 reelection campaign.

She is not, of course, the only well-known California Democrat who is considering running for Feinstein’s Senate seat. Rep. Adam Schiff also said he is considering running for the Senate in 2024. Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), two additional members of California’s congressional delegation, are also thought to be potential candidates.

Khanna declared in a statement that he would decide “in the next few months” whether to run for the Senate. No Democrat is thought to be the overwhelming favorite to succeed Feinstein, who has held the position of senator for more than three decades; this might make the Senate race unusually heated.
Porter, however, is probably one of the best-positioned. She received the support of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), an influential leftist group, shortly after announcing her campaign.
According to Adam Green, co-founder of the PCCC, “Katie knows how to fight power on behalf of families from a gut level.” “We’ve been battling with Katie as she’s taken on predatory banks, business leaders, and big-money special interests from the beginning. Voters are prepared to send her to the U.S. Senate, along with her whiteboard, at this time.
Whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the overwhelming favorite to win the seat in the general election. John Seymour (R-Calif.), a former senator, was the final Republican to retain one of the two Senate seats held by the state before Feinstein’s victory over him in 1992.
Feinstein stated that she would “announce my plans for 2024 at the proper time,” adding that for the time being, dealing with the devastating storms wreaking havoc in her home state is her top priority.

To deal with the destructive storms that are battering the state and leaving more than a dozen people dead, she added, “for now, I’m focused on making sure California has all the resources it needs.”
