Original Addams Family: American cartoonist Charles Addams invented the fictitious Addams family. About half of the 150 separate single-panel cartoons that initially contained them were published in The New Yorker over 50 years beginning in 1938. Later, they were transformed into other forms of media, including movies, video games, comic books, a musical, and merchandise.
The Addamses are a parody of the perfect 20th-century American family: an eccentric, affluent, and macabre family that seems unaware of or indifferent about how strange or terrifying they are to others.
The Addams Family comprises Gomez and Morticia Addams, their kids Wednesday and Pugsley, their relatives Uncle Fester and Grandmama, their butler Lurch, and Pugsley’s pet octopus, Aristotle, starting with the 1964 television series.
Gomez’s Cousin It and Morticia’s pet lion Kitty Kat were first introduced in 1964. The dimly glimpsed Thing (later known as a disembodied hand) debuted in 1954. In the 1993 movie Addams Family Values, Pubert Addams—Wednesday and Pugsley’s infant brother—was first featured.
A live-action television program had its ABC debut in 1964 and ran there for two seasons. The New Addams Family’s Halloween telefilm and cameo appearances by the cast in other shows were later inspired by it.
In 1973, an unrelated cartoon program aired. The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values were part of a feature film series that brought the franchise back in the 1990s (1993). Likewise, now we can see people searching for Original Addams Family.
The movies served as the basis for a second animated series (1992–1993) situated in the same make-believe world. A 1998 direct-to-video movie and a spin-off live-action television series were used to revive the series (1998–1999).
Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth starred in a live musical adaption that debuted on Broadway in 2010 and was nominated for two Tony Awards and eight Drama Desk Awards.
The animated movie The Addams Family revived the series once more in 2019, and a follow-up was released in 2021. Wednesday is a brand-new Netflix original series that premiered in 2022.
The franchise has established itself as a mainstay of mainstream culture. It has inspired scholarly publications, video game franchises, and albums based on its Grammy-nominated theme tune. They are regarded as an inspiration for the goth subculture and its fashion and have significantly impacted American comics, movies, and television.
Where Did ‘The Original Addams Family’ Start?
As previously established, Charles Addams’ The Addams Family began as a collection of comic strips in the late 1930s. Even though those comics are fantastic and the reason The Addams Family exists, most people are familiar with the eerie and hospitable family from their 1960s sitcom of the same name.
The sitcom The Addams Family began on ABC on September 18th, 1964, and airing until April 8th, 1966. Numerous aspects of the Addams mythos that are still prevalent in the franchise today were introduced by it.
The series introduced characters and ideas such as Wednesday’s passion for strange and unsettling historical facts, Gomez and Morticia’s never-ending lust, Uncle Fester’s light bulb joke, and Grandmama’s unusual cooking.
The show also plays a significant role in the popularity of The Addams Family members like Thing and Cousin It. Although they were in the comics, the showrunners insisted that they be included in the series because they liked how they looked so much.
A visitor comes to the Addams family, and they are either scared by the physical jungle they live in or perplexed about how a group of people can be so bizarre and not see anything wrong with it. This is the plot of practically every episode.
The Addams family is devoted to one another and enjoys all the peculiar events that occur; they genuinely believe that “regular” people are the ones who are truly bizarre. The Addams family never treats their visitors badly or rudely; instead, they extend a warm welcome, and it is typically the guests who are unkind or misjudge them.
The 64-episode television series featured John Astin as Gomez, Carolyn Jones as Morticia, and Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester. Despite having a brief run, the show’s popularity allowed it to continue for decades through repeats that continued to screen until the early 1990s. The renowned Grammy Award-nominated theme music for The Addams Family was also introduced to audiences during this series.

The Addams Family Gets Animated
The Addams Family first appeared in animation on television with none other than Scooby-Doo, even though they finally received their animated series in 1973.
The New Scooby-Doo Movie: “Scooby-Doo Met The Addams Family” debuted in 1972 and featured a meeting between Scooby and the gang and the enigmatic and eerie Addams Family. The program was a big success; they even got the original cast to voice their animated equivalents. However, because of copyright difficulties, it was never published on VHS or DVD.
This prompted Hannah-Barbera to create The Addams Family cartoon series in 1973. The show follows the Addams family traveling around the country in a spooky camper designed to resemble their Victorian mansion.
The Addams family came off as even more bizarre thanks to the medium of animation, even though the show is a touch lighter-hearted than the sitcom that came before it.
Coogan as Fester and Ted Cassidy as Lurch were the only two original cast members to return to play those parts. Surprisingly, Pugsly was voiced by 10-year-old Jodie Foster in this program.
The show is set in a different environment than the sitcom, although the heart of the Addams’ was remained present throughout the series. In 1977 a new live-action special was developed entitled Halloween with the New Addams Family.
This was the final appearance of the whole original cast as The Addams Family. It was also the first and only time the original Addams Family cast appeared in color.

The 1990s And The Return of ‘The Addams Family’
Then the 1990s arrived, forever altering how people perceived The Addams Family. The Addams Family is a 1991 live-action film adaption directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who is also renowned for the Men in Black series and Get Shorty.
This was the first time the peculiar family appeared on the big screen. Due to the original movie’s success, Sonnenfeld returned to helm the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values.
Die-hard fans typically view these movies as the only honest depictions of The Addams Family because they are the ones that the public is most familiar with. The cast of the movie more closely resembles the genuine Addams Family than a cast at all. Raul Julia plays Gomez in the movie. Angelica Huston plays Morticia.
Christopher Lloyd plays Uncle Fester. Christina Ricci plays Wednesday. Jimmy Workman plays Pugsley. In the first and second films, Judith Malina and Carol Kane play Grandma.
Mainly Christina Ricci frequently receives high praise for her depiction of Wednesday Addams, a position that was unquestionably meant for her. Angelica Huston was nominated for two Golden Globes for her roles as Morticia in both movies.
One of the main reasons The Addams Family has endured over time is that they are timeless, as seen in the 1990s Addams Family movies. The Addams Family doesn’t have a distinctly 1960s feel to it.
Nothing about The Addams Family was out of date because they don’t dress like people from the 1960s, the kids never spoke in slang from that era, and they never had real jobs.
Their entire act is that they are a family of oddballs with a penchant for the grim and gloomy yet positive outlook and happy family life. Because of how compelling that idea is, writers and filmmakers may set The Addams Family in any era, and the gags and characters will still be funny.
With a $30 million budget, the first movie was a huge hit, earning $113 million, and it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design. Although Addams Family Values did not have the same box office success as the original, it did get higher reviews from critics.
It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. A cult favorite, the sequel is regarded by many viewers as being superior to the first.

Where Are They Now?
They are quirky and weird! The Addams Family, which debuted in theaters in 1991, has remained one of the most well-liked Halloween movies for more than 30 years and has inspired several spinoffs and sequels.
Charles Addams’ 1930s-era illustrations were brought to life in the first movie, which starred several well-known performers, including Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Ral Juliá, and Christopher Lloyd.
The strange, aristocratic Addams family made a reunion with their long-lost relative, Fester Addams, in the macabre cult comedy. They are unaware that he is the adopted son of a loan shark who wants to take their family’s wealth.
Huston and Juliá were chosen to play the family patriarch and matriarch, respectively, when the production team began planning the movie. “Scott [Rudin] and I both agreed on Anjelica Huston and Ral Juliá as Morticia and Gomez,” director Barry Sonnenfeld recalled to The Guardian in November 2018.
We didn’t want the movie to be about stars, but the studio wished for Cher, and we thought it would throw the balance off. Ral was ideal for the role of Gomez. Never have I worked with somebody who loved life more.
Anjelica had the perfect Morticia look: she was tall, lean, and skinny. Ral and Anjelica were excellent because you never want anyone in your comedy to recognize that it’s a joke; instead, you want the actors to portray the reality of their roles.
