Mummers Parade In Philadelphia: Date, Time, History, Tickets And How To Watch?

Mummers Parade In Philadelphia: Philadelphia hosts the Mummers Parade on New Year’s Day every year. Local groups participate in one of five categories (often referred to as “New Years Associations” or “New Years Brigades”) (Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades).

They spend months creating intricate costumes, performance routines, and mobile sets. This is done in clubhouses, which also serve as social gathering spots for members, many of which are on or near 2nd Street (also known as “Two Street” by some locals) in the Pennsport area of the city’s South Philadelphia district.

WDPN-TV, better known as MeTV 2, a Wilmington, Delaware-licensed station, has shown the parade multiple times throughout its existence.

Starting in 2023, it will also stream live coverage on the website of its sister station WFMZ-TV in adjacent Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The parade has at least twice been shown nationally on television, first by the Travel Channel in 1994 and 1995 and later in edited form on WGN America and WGN-TV in 2009 and 2010. Similarly, we can now see individuals looking for Mummers Parade In Philadelphia.

What Is The Mummers Parade?

The Mummers Parade, which takes place in Philadelphia every year on New Year’s Day, is most comparable to Mardi Gras in New Orleans because it features elaborate costumes, floats, and a variety of performances from groups called New Years Associations, each of which falls into one of the categories of comics, wench brigades, fancy bands, fancy brigades, or fancy brigades.

Jokes, dances, and group competitions to see who can entertain the crowds the most are all common. The Mummers are known for their “Mummers Strut.” The song “Oh! Dem Golden Slippers” is frequently played.

Has The 2023 Mummers Parade Been Cancelled?

Nope! The COVID-19 epidemic forced the cancellation of the 2021 Mummers Parade, but the 2023 Mummers Parade is expected to proceed as scheduled (just like in 2022), so be ready to dress up!

After some participants appeared in blackface at a January 2020 Mummers Parade, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney warned that future parades would be canceled.

Early Mummers Parades frequently featured blackface, and there are still some recurring issues and themes that many find problematic and contentious.

Some participants also use language and images that many find racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, or just plain culturally insensitive.

The Mummers vowed to prevent a repeat of the incident. The String Band Association’s Sam Regalbuto said to ABC 6 News, “Training in prejudice awareness was conducted. This training is required for all of our businesses.”

“Things’s been nonstop since COVID to make it right and do what we have to do to make this procession last another 122 years,” Fancy Brigade President Tom Knight added.

How Can I Watch The Mummers Parade In 2023?
