The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety published the note investigators discovered on the shooting suspect on Friday morning. According to the letter, Anthony McRae wrote the note on February 12, the day before the shooting.
He mentioned various areas around Lansing, including East Lansing, Old Town, and DeWitt, as well as targets in Colorado Springs, a school in New Jersey, and locations nearby.
McRae said he was turned into a killer because of how people felt about him. According to reports, McRae stated that he was sick of being rejected and a loner and that his father had nothing to do with the incident.
MSU police said that it appears that he felt slighted by people or businesses and that a mental health issue may have amplified those feelings.
Notwithstanding McRae’s claim in the note that he was operating in concert with others, MSU DPPS, Michigan State Police, and FBI investigators concluded that McRae acted alone and not in concert with others.
On campus, thousands of 911 calls were placed that evening. MSU police have made available a video of their response to the incident, which was shot inside the Student Union Building.
Once McRae allegedly started shooting at Berkey Hall, police claimed they were minutes behind him. Police arrived on the site around 8:20 p.m. after the initial 911 calls were made at 8:18 p.m.

“The officers that responded were within the building within minutes,” said police chief Marlon Lynch. “One of the first things they encountered were the victims.”
McRae reportedly entered the Union at 8:24 p.m. while first responders were helping victims while he was moving toward the building. Police At 8:26 p.m., the second shooting occurred immediately before McRae departed campus. Between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., there were reportedly more than 2,100 calls to the police, more than the dispatch center received calls for in 2.5 days.
Police received a tip shortly after releasing McRae’s image. Within a half-hour, officers located him close to Cedar Street and Lake Lansing Road, where he had allegedly shot himself.
MSU police hope the incident’s lessons will make the campus safer as they continue their investigation. On Monday, the one-month anniversary of the shooting, when students return to campus, they will see increased security measures, such as buildings being shuttered earlier in the day.

- 8:30 p.m. – First emergency alert notification sent
- 8:31 p.m. – Second emergency alert notification sent
- 11:18 p.m. – Photo of suspect shared on MSU DPPS social media
- 11:35 p.m. – Ingham County 911 receives a call of a person matching the description walking on Lake Lansing Road near High Street in the City of Lansing
- 11:49 p.m. – Officers approach McRae and he shoots himself
Law enforcement is still examining and finalizing McRae’s route after he departed campus as part of the continuing investigation.
