Mississippi Reports: 14th Child Fatality Reported In Mississippi As A Result of Covid-19

Mississippi Reports: According to the state’s health department, COVID-19 has claimed the life of a 14th child in Mississippi. A newborn under one was the most recent child to pass away in Mississippi. The child was the first individual under 18 to pass away in the state in 2023 from COVID-19.

Since the first virus cases were discovered in 2020, eight children between the ages of 11 and 17 have died, making that age group the most susceptible to pediatric mortality in the state so far, according to data from the state department of health.

The fatality should serve as a reminder for locals to be vaccinated and to make sure they are current on booster injections to defend against the virus, according to Dr. Paul Byers, the state epidemiologist.

In a news release, Byers stated that vaccinations “protect not only you but also people around you who may not be eligible for vaccination or may be at higher risk for complications owing to age or underlying health concerns.”
