Who Is John Rhys Plumlee?

In his final three high school seasons, he had 5,430 passing yards, 2,314 rushing yards, and 82 total touchdowns. Soon before National Signing Day, Plumlee de-committed from Georgia following the season to accept an athletic scholarship to play baseball and football at Ole Miss.

In his senior baseball season at Oak Grove, Plumlee batted.411 with 39 hits, 45 runs scored, seven doubles, five triples, two home runs, and 24 RBI in 29 games. He was chosen 2019 5A/6A All-State.

2019 marked Plumlee’s first year as the Rebels’ backup quarterback. Following an injury to starter Matt Corral, he made his collegiate debut versus California.

He completed all seven of his throws for 82 yards while sprinting three times for 53 yards as he guided the team to a close victory until being stopped at the one-yard line with one second remaining.

The following week, on September 28, 2019, against Alabama, Plumlee got his first career start. He completed 35.7 percent of his throws for 141 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown in a 59-31 loss. On October 5, he defeated Vanderbilt for 165 rushing yards, a score, and 99 passing yards, earning him the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week honor.

With 177 running yards and two touchdowns against New Mexico State on November 10, Plumlee shattered the freshman rushing touchdown and yards record.

Plumlee completed 79 of 150 passes (52.7 percent) for 910 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions while running 154 times for 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns. He set records at Ole Miss for running yards, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns, and quarterback rushing yards in a season.

While playing in the same outfield as his football teammate Jerrion Ealy, Plumlee started the Rebels’ rookie baseball season as the team’s starting centerfielder.

Corral replaced Plumlee as the Rebels’ starting quarterback heading into his sophomore campaign. Plumlee continued to play backup quarterback and be utilized in package plays.

In the 2021 Outback Bowl, when the Rebels defeated Indiana 26-20, he occasionally lined up the as wide receiver and played a substantial amount, catching five receptions for 73 yards. Plumlee finished the season in six games with 94 rushing yards, 65 passing yards, one touchdown pass, and six receptions for 79 yards.

Plumlee was listed as a wide receiver when his junior year began. He ended the campaign with nine carries for 72 rushing yards and 19 receptions for 201 yards. After Ole Miss’s appearance in the 2022 Sugar Bowl, Plumlee declared he would use the transfer portal.
