On June 8, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, Russian-Jewish immigrant Beatrice (née Grushman) and physician Meyer C. Molinsky welcomed Joan Alexandra Molinsky into the world. Barbara Waxler was the name of her older sister. Rivers grew up in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights and Prospect Heights.
