Variety has confirmed that Jenna Ortega is interested in playing a part in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice 2”. The actress who played Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series revival “Wednesday” is currently in talks to take on the part of Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder in the original movie.
Burton, who served as executive producer of “Wednesday” and directed four of its eight episodes, is her collaborator on this project for the second time. Moreover, Michael Keaton, who plays the main character, will return.
Warner Bros. or Ortega representatives did not answer variety’s request for comment immediately. Before Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B formally joined it in February of last year, the sequel has been in the works at Warner Bros. for a while.
The three main characters in the first “Beetlejuice” are Charles (Jeffrey Jones), Delia (Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia Deetz (Ryder), who live in a house that was formerly owned by the Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis). To reclaim their previous home after dying in a car accident, the Maitlands enlisted Beetlejuice (Keaton), a “bio-exorcist,” to frighten the Deetzes away.
“Beetlejuice,” which received positive reviews, made $74 million in North America on a $15 million budget. “Keaton pops up from his tomb to liven things up when the antics pitting the good ghosts against the intruders become a clichéd cat-and-mouse game,” said Variety’s 1987 review, praising Keaton’s portrayal.
The idea of a sequel first appeared in 2013 when Keaton revealed that he and Burton had been discussing making one. There is only one Beetlejuice, Michael, stated Burton in 2014 about the character he missed.
There is a script, and I’d be thrilled to collaborate with him again. I believe the chances are better than ever right now. The character is missed. There is something fantastic and cathartic about it.
I think it to be closer than ever. In 2015, Ryder reaffirmed that the movie was being prepared for a “Late Night With Seth Meyers” appearance. Her casting was first announced on the Hot Mic podcast. Gilbertson Entertainment, CAA, and Jackoway Austen are Ortega’s agents.
