Between Janesville and Beloit, a section of I-39/90 was entirely shut down for about nine hours due to many aggregations that may have involved dozens of automobiles.
In an updated statement Friday night, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said 85 vehicles were involved in the crash. A nearby WisDOT traffic camera shows a long line of cars stuck in traffic near the scene.
Officials also stated that 21 individuals were sent to nearby hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. The incident happened around mile marker 181, which is situated between the E. Avalon Road and Shopiere Road interchanges, around 12:30 p.m., according to the State Patrol. Snow, ice, and white-out conditions, according to State Patrol, may have contributed to the initial collisions.
According to Beloit Memorial Hospital, multiple crash victims were admitted for treatment. The main issues were discomfort in the head, neck, and shoulders.

There have been no other patient-related details disclosed. All lanes of traffic were reopened at nine o’clock. According to authorities, one fatality was recorded in a separate crash on Friday.
