Republican Congressman George Santos: On Sunday, House Republicans held off on calls for troubled New York Rep. George Santos to quit. At the same time, two Democrats renewed their demand for GOP leaders to provide additional details.
But on Sunday, Republicans in the GOP freshman’s Long Island district intensified their calls for his resignation. After lying and misrepresenting his educational, professional, and family histories, including claiming falsely that he was Jewish and the descendant of Holocaust survivors, Santos is coming under increasing pressure to quit.
Additionally, he is the subject of federal and municipal inquiries into his campaign funds. Although Santos has acknowledged “elaborating” his credentials, he has insisted he is “not a criminal.”
Santos was referred to as “a nasty guy” by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” on Sunday.
The Kentucky Republican said, “He’s not the first politician, regrettably, to make it to Congress to lie. But, see, the people correctly chose George Santos as their leader.
He will be the subject of a rigorous ethical inquiry, possibly not for lying but for any infractions involving his campaign funding. Santos is, in my opinion, the subject of a thorough investigation.
“Whether or not he should resign is up to him. I didn’t make that choice. But I disapprove of how he was elected to Congress,” Comer declared. “Now, he will be expelled from Congress if he breached campaign financing regulations.”

Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska stated on Sunday that if he were in Santos’ shoes, he would retire but that the people of the New York Republican should decide whether to do so.
“If it were me, I’d step down. After going through that, I wouldn’t be able to face my voters; Bacon admitted on ABC’s “This Week.” However, most of this is between him and his constituents.
He will have to deal with them because they put him in office. Depending on how he handles this, I don’t think his chances of winning a second term are all that good.

Republican representative from Utah Chris Stewart likewise shied away from recommending that Santos vacate his position on Long Island. Stewart stated on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, “He certainly lied to his constituents, and… it’s going to be very, very difficult for him to recover the trust of his colleagues.”
The truth is that a member of Congress cannot be expelled. The decision ultimately rests with the Nassau County electorate. I can tell you this: I don’t know how I could continue to serve if I were in that scenario, and I think he needs to ask the same question.
Five of Santos’ Republican House colleagues from New York are among those who have demanded his resignation. Nassau County GOP leaders have also requested the congressman’s resignation.
According to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Santos has “a long way to go to win trust,” The House Ethics Committee may look into any complaints. However, McCarthy noted that Santos is a member of the House GOP Conference.
Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York and leader of the House GOP Conference, said on Thursday on CNN that the procedure “will play itself out.” He was legitimately elected to Congress. Democratic members of Congress have already been the subject of inquiries.
