House Passes: A bill requiring medical professionals to offer life-sustaining care in the extremely unlikely event that an infant is born alive following an attempted abortion was approved by the Republican-controlled House on Wednesday.
One of two abortion-related bills passed on Wednesday with a vote of 220-210 nearly entirely along party lines highlights the topic as a top legislative priority early in the new session.
Democrats and proponents of reproductive rights criticized the legislation as unnecessary, stigmatizing, and difficult for doctors to implement. In the Senate controlled by Democrats, the bill has absolutely no chance of even being put to a vote.

Penalties for the parents of the infant are not included in the bill. The legislation was derided by proponents of abortion rights as unnecessary because newborns’ rights, including those of those born following an attempted abortion, are already protected by a statute from 2002.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, live births following an unsuccessful abortion are likewise incredibly uncommon. Abortion rights supporters claim that the measure, in addition to being redundant, tries to limit access to abortion by using fear-mongering against doctors.

Ayers stated in a statement that “this law is purposefully deceptive and disrespectful to pregnant people and the doctors and nurses who provide their care.” Added Ayers “Let’s be clear: The law already mandates that doctors provide appropriate medical treatment. This is not how healthcare functions. It is incorrect, reckless, and dangerous to imply differently.”
The bill, according to NARAL Pro-Choice America, “would allow politicians to interfere in personal family decisions” and is a part of the House Republicans’ “dishonest and out-of-touch war against reproductive freedom.”
