A protracted custody dispute over their son led to the breakdown of their marriage in 1979. After her son was taken, Knight invested over a million dollars in the search for him. Motivational speaker Les Brown and Knight wed in 1995; however, they divorced in 1997.
Knight struggled for more than ten years with a gambling addiction. She joined Gamblers Anonymous in the late 1980s, which assisted her in breaking her gambling habit when she lost $60,000 in one night at the baccarat table.
She had been a Baptist before becoming a Catholic, and after her son and daughter decided to convert, she was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1997.
She occasionally made fun of LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley by suggesting his followers’ songs lacked “pep.” He consented, and the Grammy Award-winning gospel music chorus Saints Unified Voices was born as a result. Jimmy Newman, the son of Knight, oversaw her career through his Newman Management Inc. until his passing on July 10, 1999, at the age of 36, due to heart failure. Who Were The Pips?
Gladys, her brother Merald, sister Brenda, cousins William and Elenor Guest, and another cousin, James “Pip” Woods, created the Pips musical group in 1952.
When they started touring at the end of the 1950s, Edward Patten, a cousin of Gladys, and Langston George, a friend, took Brenda Knight’s and Eleanor Guest’s places.
They changed their name from The Pips to Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1961 after the release of their debut record, “Every Beat of My Heart.” Gladys Knight left in 1962 to have a family, and Langston George went the same year.
Gladys returned in 1964 and remained together until their breakup in 1989. After receiving a diabetes diagnosis, Edward Patten went suddenly in February 2005 due to the condition. Congestive heart failure caused the death of William Guest in 2015. Eleanor Guest, a founder of the Pips, passed away from heart failure in 1997.
