Emma Corrin Calls for Gender-Neutral Awards: The Best Actor and Best Actress categories at significant film awards should be combined into a single, gender-neutral category, according to The Crown star Emma Corrin.
Corrin told BBC News, “I hope for a future in which that occurs.
The celebrity said, “I don’t think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment,” even if they identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns.
The organizations in charge of the Baftas and the Oscars have said they are talking about it.

“It’s about everyone being able to feel acknowledged and represented,” Corrin said.
For their portrayal of Princess Diana in season four of The Crown, the 26-year-old was previously nominated for a Golden Globe and won; however, that was back when Corrin was still accepting she/her pronouns.
This year, they are the stars of the high-profile movies My Policeman and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
“It’s difficult for me at the moment trying to justify being non-binary and being nominated in female categories,” Corrin said.
Reflecting on the fact that they essentially play female roles, Corrin wondered: “When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you’re being nominated for a female or a male role?

“You can discuss awards and the representation there, but the conversation needs to be about having more representation in the material itself, in the content that we are seeing for non-binary people, for queer people, for trans people, because then I think that will change a lot.
“When those parts come up, meaning more people and more actors are playing those roles, then I think there will be more of an urgency to address these questions.”
The organization was “involved in proactive & thoughtful consultation on this matter,” a Bafta representative claimed. It is also rumored that the Academy, the organization that organizes the Oscars, is looking into the matter and having conversations about it.
The discussion over gender-neutral categories is becoming more heated, and the music business is setting the pace. While the Brit Awards combined their male and female solo categories into an artist of the year category this year, the Grammys went gender-neutral in 2012.
Chart-topper Adele took the first award home with her. But she stated the following in her victory speech: “I can see why the name of the prize was changed, but I genuinely enjoy being a female artist and a woman. I do. I’m pleased with us.”
