Dr. Charles Stanley, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Atlanta and well-known religious leader and TV preacher, d!ed Tuesday morning, April 18, at the age of 90. Stanley was known to people all over the world because his TV and radio shows were aired on many different stations.

Stanley was born in Dry Fork, Virginia, on September 25, 1932. His mother raised him. When Stanley was very young, his father had already d!ed. He got his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Richmond and his Bachelor of Divinity from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Later, he went to Atlanta’s Luther Rice Seminary and got a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Theology.

Before becoming an associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Atlanta in 1969, Stanley worked as a pastor at Fruitland Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina, First Baptist Church of Fairborn, Ohio, First Baptist Church of Miami, and First Baptist Church in Bartow, Florida. In 1971, Stanley started his TV ministry with “The Chapel Hour,” a 30-minute show that aired on two Atlanta stations. This was two years after he became the senior pastor at First Baptist Atlanta. In 1978, Stanley was contacted by the Christian Broadcasting Network, which was looking for a Bible-teaching show for its new satellite network. When “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley” was renamed, it went from having a core local audience to having a loyal following all over the country suddenly.

At the time of his de@th, Stanley’s weekly words could be heard around the world in more than 127 languages on TV, radio, shortwave, and the internet. In 1985 and 1986, Stanley was head of the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1988, he became a member of the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 1989, Religious Heritage of America named him Clergyman of the Year.

Over the course of his work, he has written more than 70 books and the last one came out in 2023. Stanley was also known for his photography, and the walls of the In Touch Ministries headquarters in Atlanta were filled with pictures he took on his own trips. In September 2020, Stanley stopped being an active senior pastor and became a pastor emeritus.

He is survived by his son Andy Stanley, who started and is the senior pastor of North Point Ministries, his daughter Becky Stanley Broderson, six grandkids, three great-grandchildren, and his half-sister Susie Cox.
