Fans of Netflix’s smash series Bridgerton were overjoyed to learn that a third and fourth season had been approved, as well as a Queen Charlotte spin-off.
In an unexpected twist, the next series will leap ahead to the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, which centers on Colin Bridgerton and his relationship with Penelope Featherington. This is a departure from the book’s chronological chronology.
Before this season’s premiere, Bridgerton had been structured in a similar way to the Julia Quinn romance books on which the show was based.
During the first season, Daphne’s relationship with the Duke of Hastings was based on the first Bridgerton novel, The Duke and I; in the second, Viscount Bridgerton’s fling with Kate Sharma was based on the second novel, The Viscount and I.
Jess Brownell, who is taking over from Chris Van Dusen as showrunner for the upcoming series, explained the choice to center season 3 on Penelope and Colin: “I believe Colin and Penelope’s moment has finally come. We’ve grown attached to both of these performers since we’ve seen them onscreen since season one.”
She went on to say: “We are familiar with them as individuals… At times, Colin comes close to realizing Penelope has affection for him, but he doesn’t quite make it to the other side yet. We didn’t want to stay in the same rut with that dynamic, so we pushed it into their season instead. The timing couldn’t have been better.”
For the second season of Bridgerton, Netflix has made significant changes to the books, with Anthony (Jonathan Bailey in the Bridgerton cast) becoming engaged to Edwina Sharma before ending up with her older sister, Kate.
There isn’t much information about the third season’s cast yet, but we do know that Bailey and Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma) will return, with the latter abandoning her role in Sex Education to concentrate on the historical drama.
Hannah Dodd (Enola Holmes, Anatomy of a Scandal) will replace Ruby Stokes as Francesca Bridgerton, who will not be returning. Lockwood & Co, a new Netflix series that will star Stokes, is the reason for the switch, Deadline reports.
Aside from the new actress playing Francesca, the showrunner Chris Van Dusen is no longer on board and has been replaced by Jess Brownell (Inventing Anna, Scandal).
This year’s Radio Times Cover Party in London was attended by actress Andoh, who had nothing but love for both Van Dusen and Brownell.
Bridgerton Season 3 Release Date Speculation
Bridgerton season 3 has not yet been announced by Netflix, but this author will, of course, update this page as information becomes available.
In addition to the fact that Bridgerton will be back, there is still little information available on when Season 3 of the show will be released.
The actress who portrays Penelope Featherington recently told RadioTimes.com and other media that she planned to speak with the show’s new showrunner, Jess Brownell, regarding the upcoming season and ask, “So what’s happening?”
Once COVID restrictions are loosened, season 3 may arrive as early as 2023 – especially considering Netflix’s first season premiered just over a year ago.
At this point, we don’t know when season 3 will be available on Netflix, but at least we know it will be back for season 4 as well.
‘BREAKING NEWS FROM THE TON,’ wrote Netflix in a tweet from April 2021, announcing the exciting development. It’s official: Bridgerton will be back for seasons three AND four!
Season 3 of Bridgerton won’t have Chris Van Dusen as showrunner, but screenwriter Jess Brownell will take over for the next two seasons.
“Bridgerton will always have a particular place in my heart and I think I did what I set out to do,” Van Dusen said in an interview with RadioTimes.com and other media outlets.
Even though I’d like to think that one day I may be able to recapture the magic that I felt during that period, I had to move on.
Bridgerton Season 3 Cast Speculation
The following fan-favorite cast members have been confirmed for Bridgerton season 3:
- Jonathan Bailey as Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton
- Simone Ashley as Kathani “Kate” (née Sharma), Viscountess Bridgerton
- Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington
- Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton
- Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton
“We’ll be back!” they exclaimed. “We’re just getting started,” she says of Kate and Anthony’s relationship. “For season 3, we have the incredible Jess Brownell at the helm as showrunner.
“Everything’s just getting started, in my opinion. Let go a little more and have fun together in season three, and I’d love to see that happen. Both of them deserve it, in my opinion.”
Kate is now in command of the home, and she’s got some huge boots to fill. She’ll be a very different character in season three.” I am confident that she will succeed.
“It’s up to Kate whether or not she wants to share her tenderness and sensitivity with Anthony. Having a place to call her own and a family to call her own is all that matters to me at this point. I can’t wait to see how she grows up..”
Season 3 will center on Coughlan and Newton’s romance, which was confirmed along with their return.
“Like Lady Whistledown, I’ve been holding quite a big secret for quite some time… but I can finally tell you that @bridgertonnetflix Season Three is Colin and Penelope’s Story,” Coughlan wrote on Instagram.
Francesca Bridgerton will be played by Hannah Dodd (Enola Holmes, Anatomy of a Scandal), who replaces Ruby Stokes.
No other cast members have been ruled out from returning for Bridgerton season 3.
- Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury
- Lorraine Ashbourne as Mrs. Varley
- Harriet Cains as Philippa Featherington
- Bessie Carter as Prudence Featherington
- Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Basset (née Bridgerton), Duchess of Hastings
- Ruth Gemmell as Violet, Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton
- Florence Hunt as Hyacinth Bridgerton
- Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton
- Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte
- Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton
- Will Tilston as Gregory Bridgerton
- Polly Walker as Portia, Baroness Featherington
- Martins Imhangbe as Will Mondrich
- Calam Lynch as Theo Sharpe
- Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown
Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton will likely take the stage in season 4 rather than the upcoming third season if the following season adapts Julia Quinn’s third book.
Actress Sophie Beckett might yet be cast as his love interest in the novel An Offer from a Gentleman. They first meet at a ball and don’t see each other again for two years before they do so again.
The show may alter his story so that we see him again, but perhaps with a twist.
According to Deadline, Jonathan Bailey, who portrayed Anthony Bridgerton in season 1, will return as the show’s lead star with Phoebe Dynevor, who played the show’s star Daphne in season 1.
Ahead of season 2, Bailey and Simone Ashley talked about returning for a third season with RadioTimes.com and other members of the media, with Bailey saying: “We’ll have to see if we’re invited.”
Ashley chimed in: “Kate and Anthony’s love story should be continued in season 3 if I return, and I’d like to see them play post-wedding and enjoy their honeymoon romance. More horseback riding, too.”
It has been revealed that Kate’s sister Edwina Charithra Chandran will not appear in the third season of the show, saying: I don’t know “The show is about the Bridgerton family that we know exists in the “Bridgerverse,” as we like to say, and Edwina isn’t one of them. But I’m grateful to have had such a terrific role this season, and I’ll take it.”
“I want Edwina to find love, but I think there is a lot more essential tale to be told first—and then love may happen—which is one of self-discovery,” she previously told The Hollywood Reporter.”
She went on to say: “Edwina’s short-term future should be filled with excitement and adventure,” I hope.
Who Will Bridgerton Season 3 Be About?
There has been much conjecture regarding who will be the main character in season three, and now we have an answer.
According to the novels by Julia Quinn, Benedict would be the protagonist of season three if the series were to follow her order of precedence.
However, it has been established that Penelope and Colin will take center stage in the next third season.
Bridgerton S3 will follow the budding relationship between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.

In a previous interview, Shonda Rhimes teased that the third season would deviate from the show’s original material.
According to Entertainment Tonight, “We’re not exactly going in order—but we will be seeing each one of the siblings and their experiences.”
The actress who plays Kate Sharma on the show, Simone Ashley, had hinted that the key romance in the following season would be “Polin” (Penelope and Colin).
For sure, she told E! News, “there will be a post-marriage Kanthony narrative”. For both Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton, I’m eager to see how well they perform, but I’m also eager to play around with the Anthony and Kate storyline now that they’re in a loving relationship.
According to Chris Van Dusen, the show’s creator, the events in the book aren’t exactly what they appear to be.
The order of the novels “isn’t a given,” he stated. “I think whatever we do in season 3 and whatever sibling we’re focused on remains to be seen,” he continued.
Bridgerton Season 3 Plot
Netflix has stated that the third novel in Quinn’s Bridgerton trilogy, An Offer from a Gentleman, would not be used for the third season of Bridgerton.
To learn more about Colin and Penelope’s love story, readers will have to wait until the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
The following season will not have a plot from Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
Chris Van Dusen, showrunner of the hit NBC series “Penelope,” has a different take on the plot line than the books. “We think that Penelope is lovely,” he says of the makeover in the 2002 novel.
According to him, “Her being a wallflower in our show I think is about her degree of confidence more than it is about her external appearance.”
“I feel like if you see Penelope gushing over this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together!'” Coughlan previously told Netflix Tudum about what viewers can anticipate in season 3. Moving on and getting over it is the only solution.
In the course of the season, Jess has been in touch with Luke and me, and I’m confident that viewers will be riveted. “I think book lovers will be pleased,” says the author.
While the following season is expected to focus on the consequences of Eloise realizing Penelope is Lady Whistledown in season 2, it is also expected to inform us if they regain their financial condition after their cousin Jack proved revealed to be a scammer in season 3.
Anthony and Kate will be back for the third installment, as previously mentioned, with Simone Ashley promising a stronger Kate. However, what will transpire between the two remains a mystery.
