Brendan Fraser On Movie-Star Comeback ‘I’m Waiting For Someone’ To ‘Tell Me That The Jig Is Up’!

Brendan Fraser On Movie-Star Comeback: Brendan Fraser is thinking back on the visceral standing ovation he received when The Whale made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The 54-year-old actor spoke candidly about the film and its reception during an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday.

“I started bawling. According to Fraser, the six-minute standing ovation “fixed all the problems. I suppose it depends on who’s holding the stopwatch,” Fraser said in response to conflicting estimates of the length of the standing ovation. At the London Film Festival in October, he received an equal reaction.

He continued, “I feel like I’m still waiting for someone to walk in and say that the jig is up, you know.” When discussing the movie in more detail, Fraser stated that he was drawn to portraying the role because he “thought that there was a real tale to tell about someone who is locked behind closed doors.”

He remarked of the Darren Aronofsky-directed movie, “I thought, you know,’ sign me up,'” going on to discuss his admiration for the prosthetics that allowed him to play the role: “I adore the art of filmmaking and all of its components.”

In the film, Fraser plays a reclusive professor who tries to get back in touch with his teenage daughter, whom Sadie Sink portrays.

Seth Meyers, the show’s host, stood up at the end and came over to Fraser, offering him a hug and a handshake as the audience applauded loudly. Fraser was “very nice and lovely,” according to Meyers when they worked together on Journey to the Center of the Earth in 2008.

Meyers also praised Fraser’s subsequent “earned” accomplishments. Actor Nick Kroll raved to Meyers on a Late Night appearance after The Whale’s Venice Film Festival showing in September, saying that Fraser was simply superb in the movie.

This is his big comeback, he declared. He receives an eight-minute standing ovation when the movie is over. He is sobbing. You can almost hear him say, “I’m back, baby.” It’s Oscar night. “Here we go.”

Fraser was nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama. Later this month, the Oscar nominees will be revealed. Fraser told Meyers on Thursday, “I know I’m doing what I love.” I’m overjoyed to have that opportunity. In cinemas currently is The Whale.
