After borrowing a cell phone to call his mother on Tuesday afternoon, the suspect in the early-morning shooting deaths of three people at a convenience store in Yakima, Washington, passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to investigators.
According to Yakima Police Chief Matthew Murray, the suspected shooter, identified by officials as 21-year-old Jarid Haddock, wanted to borrow a cell phone from a woman who was shopping close to a Target store.
Haddock’s communication with his mother is said to have been overheard by the witness who lent the cell phone. Murray claimed he said, “I killed those folks,” among other incriminating things. “He repeatedly said he would kill himself in front of her.”
According to Murray, the woman could retrieve her phone from the suspect and dial 911. Murray described the woman as “courageous” for bringing the group there. She told the shooter approaching her in the 911 call, he claimed.

The gunman then stole the automobile and drove east on state Route 24 toward Moxee, according to the police chief, who claimed that surveillance video showed a fourth person getting into the passenger seat. Murray observed that it was not immediately clear if the fourth individual had been shot and, if so, whether the wound was fatal.
Yakima police later confirmed the identification of the fourth shooting victim. It appears that the car belonged to the shooter, and authorities speculated that he may have blasted the glass because he had accidentally locked his keys inside.
